Firstborn A Novel Descendants of the House of Bathory Tosca Lee Books

I struggled a little with the first in the series, Progeny, as it felt half-baked. When it ended I felt it was half-time in the telling of the story. However, Firstborn has none of those issues. This was excellent and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I think you could read this without the reading Progeny because there is a very good overview of the first novel in the first chapter and having read it I felt immediately up to date in the story.

Audra Ellison is a tremendous character. She discovers the secret that led her to give up everything, well there are actually two secrets but you'll have to read the novel to find out both. She is determined to bring an end to the 400-year war that has led to her kind being wiped out by the Scions and her only way of doing this is to kill The Historian, this master manipulator who is pulling her all the strings of the Scions.

Audra has a special gifting that continues to develop (the ability to persuade people to do things) and together with her husband, Luka, and her merry gang of brilliant young operatives she goes on the hunt. Be hunted or be the hunter.

The story takes us on a tour of Eastern Europe with a difference; as one reviewer describes it, "the rich fabric of the underground", where the Progeny hang out in all their wonderful disguises trying to avoid their designated hunter.

Tosca Lee's writing is exceptional, as always, and we get to feel the vitality and brazenness of this young community. Ms Lee pulls back the covers as she explores the power of identity, giftedness and fitting in reflected by this rich kaleidoscope of characters. The action is fast and intense but Ms Lee gave us short stops to take a breath. And then the bombshells! The identity of The Historian? Who is "double-agent" Serge Deniel really serving?

Unlike the first novel I was very satisfied by the ending and especially the wonderful location of those final pages (a personal favourite spot!). Is there more to tell, are the Progeny able to live in peace, has the reign of The Historian came to and end? My hunch is there is another episode and I really hope Audra Ellison bugs Ms Lee to writing more of her story.

Firstborn A Novel Descendants of the House of Bathory Tosca Lee Books Reviews

Waiting over 24 hours to read the follow up to Tosca Lee's The Progeny was pure torture. I am not certain how those who read The Progeny a year ago survived the wait; I would have had to of re-read the book constantly over that year. Elizabeth Bathory is one of those that I have studied over many years, reading what I can on her. If I ever had a choice on an author I would wish to tackle her tale, Tosca Lee's name would have been top of my list. I am so happy she wrote these books.

We may never know the truth behind Elizabeth Bathory, but one thing is for certain No one will ever create a tale as enchanting and full of magic and wonder as Tosca Lee. With twists and turns (some of which you might be able to see coming) to deaths you never expected, to alliances you can't help but frown at, Tosca created a whole world of intrigue and adventure.

I have never been one to want to go to a club and dance the night away, but I think I might enjoy a Progeny party in one of their underground sanctuaries. The anonymity, the passion, the frenzy, the adrenaline, all combining to burn an overwhelming energy.

This book starts where the first one leaves off, after a stunning discovery by Audra. The race is still on to put a face to the Historian and to destroy the Scion's power. To do this, people must die, truth's must be revealed, and danger must be faced. With an ending just as amazing as the first book, there is nothing you will be wanting from this book (except for more of it).

If there is anything that this book, and it's predecessor The Progeny, teach us, it is to live life to the fullest. Today is the only day guaranteed, and even then you might not make it through. Enjoy every moment. See the good. Love with passion. Love without end. And never give up on those you love the most. Be there for them. Support them. Hold them tight for as long as you can. But mostly Live.
Having been a fan of Tosca's for years now, I can easily say she makes it easy to be one. With each book she cements my admiration and respect for her as a writer and storyteller.
Firstborn is as fast paced as its predecessor, Prodigy, but really is another story that can stand on its own without feeling like a necessary companion to the first. The rich fabric of this underground world that has existed for centuries is woven seamlessly throughout the plot, and is as much a character as the main ones. The dialogue and expressions of the main and side characters are developed, quick, witty, and paced fast enough to draw you in but not so fast that it removes their depth. This fictional world Tosca has created of the descendants of Elizabeth Bathory creates a writing universe into itself, and one in which there are MANY more stories to tell.
