Enjoyed this read. Joe Polito is a complex character who reads classical Russian literature while drinking a beer in a Somerville blue collar bar. He also manages to get involved with a beautiful stranger, a missing friend, the police force in several cities, the mob, and corrupt politicians. The book is an easy read, but with enough plot twists to hold my attention. it's a suspense novel that keeps the pace throughout. Clipped language contributes to the noir tone of the book. I am familiar with the cities mentioned in the story and thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions. Looking forward to Joe Polito's next adventures.

Had me going from Page 1. Easy to read. Great suspense. Can' t wait until his next book !
I loved this book. Using a clean, simple style, the author has crafted an interesting, fast paced and believable story with well conceived characters. I couldn't put the book down until I had read the whole thing. I would recommend this to all who like a well crafted mystery!
Robbens' novel is one of the best I've read this year. The story is so gripping I couldn't put the book down. Was the storyline true?
(Being from Massachusetts gave it special meaning for me). The writing is excellent with a very smooth flow and easy transitions between chapters. The author's use of language, simple and clear, makes us look forward to the unraveling of the rather complex plot, and causes the reader to eagerly await his next novel with anticipation!
A great attention grabber, from the first paragraph. The story line flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next. So much so, I almost read the whole book in one sitting.
This was a most engaging detective story - I couldn't put it down. The book was fast-paced, with a well-developed plot and excellent character development. I felt as though I really knew Joe Polito, Eileen, and Rose and Pat Sheehan and hope we see a follow-up Joe Polito story. The author is an extremely talented writer and I look forward to more of his work.

Loved this book - the very real characters, the absorbing plot, and especially the crisp and subtle writing. The descriptive sense of place was perfect, but not overdone as it is so often. Though the author has his own style, one can see he is on the same track as the best of mystery writers such as Ross Mcdonald and Robert Parker. I hope we will see more of Joe Polito in the future. If you are a fan of mystery novels, don't miss this one.
A product of Somerville I really could relate to this book, to Joe Polito, the city he grew up in and the Somerville of present day. The author does a great job depicting Joe Polito's personality and he captures the pride, relationships and loyalty in a changing city. The writing is relaxed and the characters truly come to life. The story moves well and makes for an enjoyable read. The only negative is that it wasn't longer; I wanted more! I do hope that we hear from Robbens again and again with the continuing adventures of this vivid Somervillian. Joe Polito can surely give Spencer a run for his money. I highly recommend this book to those familiar with this historical city and to those who simply like a well-written fast read.
